Pims Hospital Fire: What the Inquiry Found After the Sole Infant Survivor’s Death

The death of the last surviving infant from the Pims hospital fire has turned fresh attention onto a government inquiry report that lays out how the blaze started and why it proved so deadly.

The newborn, the only baby pulled alive from the nursery fire, died this week after weeks of treatment. Her death raised the overall toll from the August 26 disaster to fifteen infants.

Background: The Night of the Fire

The fire tore through the neonatal nursery at Pims’ Mother and Child Hospital in Islamabad in the early hours of August 26. Fifteen medically dependent newborns were in the ward, which an inquiry later noted had been designed to hold only ten.

A staff nurse, Razia Noreen, managed to reach one infant and carry her out during an eight-second window before smoke made the nursery impossible to enter. Fourteen other newborns could not be reached in time.

Details: How the Investigation Unfolded

A final inquiry report, released this week, identified the likely point of ignition as a damaged electrical cable feeding an air-conditioning unit. Investigators said localized heating from the fault likely damaged the cable’s insulation and set nearby combustible material alight.

The report also raised a more troubling finding. It said Pims had already been warned about fire-safety weaknesses after a separate, smaller fire broke out at a nursing hostel on the same campus roughly seven weeks earlier.

Warnings That Went Unheeded

According to investigators, that earlier incident had exposed multiple gaps, including problems with smoke detection, fire alarms, electrical inspections, evacuation planning, and firefighting equipment.

The inquiry concluded that these warnings were never converted into a structured, independently verified corrective programme before the nursery fire broke out weeks later.

Quotes From Officials

Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal confirmed that criminal proceedings have been launched against nine hospital officials in connection with the fire, following the police investigation opened in Islamabad.

A hospital spokesperson confirmed the infant’s death to international media this week, describing it simply as the loss of the nursery fire’s only surviving patient.

Impact: Accountability and Public Reaction

The findings have added pressure on public-hospital administrators nationwide to review fire-safety compliance, particularly in neonatal and intensive-care units housing vulnerable patients.

Separately, the government has moved to recognise the rescue effort itself. President Asif Ali Zardari approved a Tamgha-i-Shujaat bravery award for nurse Razia Noreen, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presented her with a cheque worth Rs 10 million for risking her life during the rescue.

The dual response, criminal proceedings against officials alongside formal recognition for frontline staff, reflects the scale of public reaction to the disaster.

Conclusion

With the sole survivor’s death, the Pims hospital fire has become one of the deadliest single hospital incidents involving newborns in recent memory in Pakistan. Authorities say the criminal case against hospital officials is ongoing, and further safety reforms are expected to follow the inquiry’s findings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened in PIMS hospital Islamabad?

On August 26, a fire broke out in the neonatal nursery of Pims’ Mother and Child Hospital in Islamabad, where fifteen newborns were being treated. Fourteen infants died in the fire, and the one baby rescued alive later died from smoke-inhalation complications after weeks of treatment, bringing the total number of deaths to fifteen.

What does PIMS stand for?

PIMS stands for the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, a leading public-sector hospital and medical training institute based in Islamabad, offering a wide range of specialized healthcare services including maternal and neonatal care.

What was the reason for the fire?

An official inquiry found that a damaged electrical cable linked to an air-conditioning unit was the probable ignition point, with localized heating likely sparking nearby combustible material. The inquiry also found that earlier fire-safety warnings at the hospital, issued after a separate smaller fire weeks before, had not been properly addressed.
